The youth team
returned to winning ways in their latest Allied Counties game with a
comprehensive 5-0 victory over local rivals Milton United.
For 20
minutes the game was fairly even with both sides failing to keep the
football and not creating any goal scoring opportunities. However
the game changed in the 23rd
minute when
John Mills
opened the scoring in a rare Abingdon attack when hesitancy in the
Milton
defence allowed him to pounce on a loose ball
inside the goal area. The goal settled Abingdon and they started to
take control of the game and played some good football. In the 28th
minute one such move saw Lyle Gifford play Mark Druce in behind the
Milton
defence and although Mike Terry in the
Milton
goal was able to parry the shot
Mills
tapped home the rebound. Four minutes later and Abingdon got their
third when a
Gifford cross
cum shot nestled in the far corner of the net. With Abingdon well on
top Mills got his hat trick with the best move of the half as Josh
Cottrell and Aaron Andrews interchanged passes down the right wing
and Andrews pinpoint cross was hammered home by the onrushing
Mills.
Milton
to their credit raised their game at the start of the second half
and their new found determination saw them fashion a number of half
chances but they could not quite trouble Adam Lonsdale in the
Abingdon goal. As the half wore on both teams seemed to be happy
with their second half performances although Abingdon did force
Terry in to a couple of good saves, 1st
from a point blank Pablo Haysham shot and then a dipping long range
Kearan Russell shot. Just as it looked as if the half was going to
remain goalless
Cottrell played
a one two with Andrews on the half way line, cut inside and jinked
past 3 defenders before drawing Terry and clipping the ball in to
the far corner for the goal of the game.
A good
performance from the team who at times played their best football of
the season.
