Abingdon United Reserves 3 Newbury
1 |
|
Abingdon Reserves continue their run of
wins in 2012 by beating high fliers Newbury
Town.
Both teams traded blows throughout the first
half but it was Newbury who took the lead in the
20th minute when their forward cut inside from
Abingdon’s right back position and sent a low
shot that beat Craig Evans by the near post.
Abingdon started the brighter of the two teams
in the second half but it was not until the 60th
minute that Joe Parker was put through on goal
but his shot shaved the outside of the post
keeping the game at 1 – 0 to the visitors.
Abingdon continued to press and in the 70th
minute Steve Andrews headed goal wards from a
corner and the ball was deemed to have crossed
the line from an eagle eyed linesman 1 – 1.
In order to keep up the pressure fresh legs were
required and that came by the way of the
introduction of Frankie Merola and Ryan Macer.
These substitutions gave Abingdon further
momentum and it was Merola in the 72nd minute of
the game who scored Abingdon’s second goal with
a strike from outside the area.
This clearly stunned Newbury and they were
stunned further when Drew Fowler ran on to a
through ball from Chris Baker and chipped the
keeper from a full 25 yards.
Newbury pressed forward and were nearly rewarded
with an excellent strike from the edge of
Abingdon’s area, which was expertly tipped over
the bar by Craig Evans.

Abingdon United Reserves conceded in the
36th minute and neither goalkeeper were troubled
for the rest of the first half.
Abingdon started brightly in the second half and
a long defensive clearance from Chris Baker in
the 47th minute put Jamie Mundy through on goal
but the Woodley Town keeper pulled off a fine
save to keep the visiting side ahead.
In the 53rd minute Abingdon came close to
scoring again when a deep free kick was met by
Chris Baker at the back post, which he headed
back across goal and it was met on the volley by
Aaron Andrews.
The combination of a despairing dive and
defenders bodies on the line kept the ball out
and it was cleared to safety once more.
The game then opened out with both sides
creating chances but Abingdon’s fate was sealed
when Aaron Andrews picked up a second yellow
card in the 75th minute.
Tommy Hayday was brought off the bench on the
80th minute to replace Nick Christodoulou and
his intervention enabled Abingdon to create
chances but Woodley Town saw out a good away
victory for the visiting side.

Highmoor Ibis 4 Abingdon United
Reserves 2 |
|
Abingdon United Reserves got off
to a very slow start and were 1 – 0 down after 2
minutes and conceded the second goal only 6
minutes later.
Highmoor Ibis pressed on for further goals and
Abingdon were lucky to end the first half having
only conceded two goals.
Abingdon started the second half brightly and in
the 48th minute were rewarded with their efforts
when the ball was handled in the oppositions
area and Drew Fowler calmly slotted home the
penalty.
This spurred on Abingdon who were definitely
back in the game and both sides had chances to
score but were only kept at bay by good
goalkeeping from both teams keepers.
The game turned on the 79th minute when the
referee decided that Chris Baker had
deliberately handled the ball in the area,
stopping a goal opportunity and branded a red
card for the unlucky defender. Highmoor Ibis
slotted home the penalty and Abingdon had the
unenviable task of finishing the game with just
10 men.
From here on the game turned in favour of
Abingdon United who upped their game to try to
redeem a poor situation. Reward was not long
coming when Joe Parker turned on the edge of the
area and curled a 20 yard shot into the top
right hand corner of the oppositions net,
leaving the goalkeeper with no chance and the
game was back to 3 – 2.
Abingdon continued to press but it was in the
90th minute when Steve Mundy’s opposing winger
got passed him for the first time in the game
and put in a pin point cross that was met by the
Highmoor Ibis forward who slotted home their 4th
goal.

Abingdon United Reserves 3 Hungerford
Town Reserves 2 |
|
A well contested match see Abingdon
United Reserves collect three valuable home
points. The opening goal came after 15 minutes,
which was the result of a poor goalkeepers
clearance that fell to Nick Christodoulou on the
edge of the area who slotted home calmly into an
open net.
Hungerford’s reply came after 27 minutes when
they broke down the Abingdon defence with some
good wing play and the half ended 1 – 1.
It all came to life in the second half on the
50th minute with a 25 yard strike from Adam
French that put the home side ahead.
Abingdon continued to press and in the 52nd
minute Nick Christodoulou was fouled in the area
resulting in a penalty and the Hungerford
defender being sent off. The injustice of the
sending off was rewarded with the penalty being
saved keeping the score at 2 – 1.
More drama was to follow when on the 57th minute
another Hungerford player picked up a second
booking leaving the visitors with just nine
players to see out the game.
This created a positive attitude and the
visitors resorted to a 3 – 3 – 2 formation that
Abingdon never entirely got to grips with and it
was the home side that were under pressure for a
large spell of the second half and conceded a
goal to take the score to a well deserved 2 – 2.
Abingdon rode their luck and hit Hungerford on
the break. A mazy run in the 85th minute from
Ryan Macer with a good final pass resulted in
Joe Parker being one on one with the Keeper and
he calmly chipped the keeper to take the score
to 3 – 2. |

Maidenhead Reserves 4 Abingdon United
Reserves 1 |
|
Abingdon United Reserves struggled to
compete with a very strong Maidenhead United
Reserves team. The match started off relatively
even with both teams exchanging chances on goal
but it was the home team that settled into their
stride after 20 minutes when Abingdon conceded
the first goal from an excellent strike from
just outside the goal area.
Craig Evans kept Abingdon in the match with a
string of excellent saves and Abingdon went in
at half time just 1 – 0 down. Despite Abingdon’s
best efforts to retain possession in the second
half a string of individual errors were punished
by Maidenhead who scored 60th minute.
Abingdon conceded their 3rd from a poor back
pass from Aaron Andrews which left Craig Evans
stranded and a penalty was conceded and then
converted to put Abingdon 3 – 0 down and
basically the game was over.
Abingdon conceded a 4th goal in the 75th minute
and were struggling to win any second ball
throughout the half.
A few opportunities on goal were created and Abingdon were rewarded with a
goal when Jamie Mundy crossed into the area in
the 80th minute and the ball was powered into
the Maidenhead goal by Nick Bayliss. |

Abingdon United Reserves 2 Flackwell
Heath 3 |
|
Abingdon United
Reserves were dismissed from the Bluefin
Insurance Brokers Challenge Cup by Flackwell
Heath who were quite simply the better team.
Flackwell Heath got off to a very good start
scoring their first two goals in the 3rd and
11th minutes of the game. It wasn’t until after
the second goal was conceded that Abingdon
knuckled down, retained their shape and applied
pressure back on the opposition.
There were goal opportunities at both ends of
the pitch but Flackwell controlled most of the
possession despite the efforts of the Abingdon
midfield who worked tirelessly to close down the
play.
The first half appeared to be coming to a 0 – 2
close but in the 41st minute the Flackwell Heath
forwards movement caught Abingdon out and the
half closed at 0 – 3.
Abingdon changed their formation in the second
half and kept Flackwell Heath pinned back for
the first 15 minutes, which resulted in Joe
Parker scoring in the 60th minutes from outside
the box with a sharp turn and shot.
This rallied an increase in the pace of the game
for Abingdon and Steve Mundy was unlucky to hit
the bar with a rasping 30 yard shot.
Abingdon continued to press and were caught
napping again and conceded a 4th goal in the
67th minute.
With nothing to lose Nick Christoudolou was
brought on to inject some pace on the wing and
this swung the game back in favour of Abingdon.
Flackwell gradually took the sting out of the
game and Abingdon conceded a 5th when Chris
Baker slipped on the half way line and the ball
broke to the Flackwell heath centre forward.
Theo Dalton made an excellent save against the
oncoming forward and the ball broke to another
Flackwell Heath player who was in an offside
position, which was not flagged by the linesman
and he slotted home with consummate ease.
Joe Parker scored his and Abingdon’s 2nd goal in
the 91st minute with a brave strike on the edge
of the area as he was closed down by two
Flackwell players. Overall a fair result as
Flackwell were definitely the better side but
Abingdon came away with the satisfaction of
drawing the 2nd half, which appeared to be not
on the cards going in 0 – 3 down at half time. |

Abingdon secure 1st home
win
against Letcombe |
A good second half comeback saw abingdon get
there first home win of the season, beating
letcombe 3-2
The game was only 4mins old when a mistake by
Callum McMahon gifted Letcombe their opening
goal which Lyle Gifford put away. This appeared
to knock the confidence out of abingdon and they
struggled to get anything going for the rest of
the 1st half.
The 2nd half saw a much improved performance
with Abingdon pinning back Letcombe and coming
very close to equalising on a few occasion's in
the opening 20 Min's. It looked like it was
going to be another frustrating afternoon for
the home side, but on the hour Jordan Marsh
picked the ball up just outside the box and his
shot found the corner of the net much to the the
relief of his team mates. The pressure on
letcombe increased and within 5 Min's Jordan
Marsh netted his second goal when he neatly
controlled a cross and finished coolly. In the
75 minute another good piece of build up play
saw the cross from Dwayne Adeleye put away by
with ease by Jamie Mundy to make the score 3-1 .
Fortunately Adam Pendell's last minute reply
came too late for letcombe.

ABINGDON'S POOR HOME FORM CONTINUES"
|
"Abingdon's poor
home form continued as they went down 1- 0 to a
plucky lambourn side. In an unispiring game,
maybe best forgotton neither side created much
in way of goal chances, with both defences well
on top. It looked like a 0-0 draw was on the
cards but from a very dubious freekick lambourn
scored a good goal just after 70 mins. The last
20 mins saw a brief rally from the home side
but they were unable to create little and the
game petered out, Lambourn were obviously
delighted with their win whereas the home team
were left baffled as they suffered their 3rd
Home defeat in as many games. Definitely one to
forget boys! |

Abingdon bounce back. |
Abingdon bounce back from
there drubbing on Saturday to beat local rivals
didcot 7-0. A much improved team performance
saw Abingdon dominate the match from the first
whistle scoring at regular intervals .Goals from
Chris Baker, Nick Bayliss and a double from Joe
Parker gave Abingdon a commanding 4-0 first
half lead.
Second half saw a slight drop in performance but 3 goals in the last
20mins from Nick Christodolou, Aaron Andrews and
Ryan Macer completed a good day for Abingdon and
hopefully washed away the bad memories from
Saturdays game.

number of chances and where unlucky not to score
a couple of goals in a spirited second half
performance.

Abingdon lose in a 8 Goal thriller
|
Abingdon lost
their first home league game, going down 5 -3 to
a useful Chalfont Wasps side, although some poor
defending and going down to 10 men just after
half time played a big part in the defeat.
Abingdon started off brightly passing the the
ball well however after 10 Min's from a free
kick just outside the box, Chalfont opened the
scoring from a cruel deflection.
The game evened out after this although the home
side did create a couple of good openings,
however on 25 Min's Chalfont scored their 2nd
goal and what a fine goal it was.
The remaining 15 Min's of the half saw Abingdon
trying very hard to get back into the match
going close on a number of occasion's.
with 5 Min's remaining Abingdon got the goal
their were looking for with Kieran Hughes calmly
putting away a cross.
The 2nd half got off to the worst possible start
for Abingdon, conceding a near post headed goal
from a corner kick after 2 Min's and within
further 5 Min's Ricky Barrett being sent off
for a very poor tackle.
what we then saw was a tremendous fight back
from Abingdon, Joe Parker reduced the deficit to
3-2 scoring a well taken goal in the 6 yard box
only to see Chalfont score almost immediately
from some sloppy defending by the team..
Back came Abingdon and Joe Parker got his second
goal with a tremendous volley from edge of box
to make it 4-3.
The last ten Min's were incredibly exciting with
Abingdon giving everything and Chalfont looking
dangerous on the break.
On the 90minute Abingdon were awarded a penalty
when Joe Parker was brought down.
however Joe' poor spot kick was saved, One final
attack from Chalfont saw them open up the
Abingdon defence to score their 5th goal and
seal what was a very entertaining match.. |

Reserves win League opener |
Promoted Abingdon United get off to a
good start, winning there first game in Division
1 East away to Penn&Tyler with goals from Jamie
Mundy, Aaron Andrews and Jordan Marsh.
Abingdon had the majority of play in the opening
half creating several chances.
From one of these Jamie Mundy opened the scoring
after 15 minutes slotting the ball home after
the ball fell to him following a corner.
Just on half time Aaron Andrews picked the ball
up deep in his own half and after an amazing run
beating several players coolly slotted the ball
passed the goalkeeper to give Abingdon a two
goal advantage going into the second half where
they were defending the slope.
Second half saw Penn&tyler get off to the best
possible start scoring a penalty after 5 minutes
with some rash defending. For the next 20
minutes Abingdon were put under the cosh as the
home side pushed for an equaliser. In the final
20 minutes Abingdon managed to get better
control of the game and started to push hard
them selves for the next goal.
With 5 minutes to go some neat passing saw
Jordan Marsh finished off a good move to secure
the win and 3 points for Abingdon.

"RESERVES LIFT CLANFIELD
CUP " |
The reserves completed their pre season
friendlies by lifting the Clanfield Cup beating
Clanfield 2- 0 on Saturday 6 August, with Jamie
Mundy scoring both goals. this is the second
time the club has won this trophy, the previous
being in 2001.
The team had initially seen the competition
as another opportunity to prepare for the the
coming season.Therefore the players and
management were delighted with the outcome
particularly given the tough opposition they
faced in the earlier rounds.
The first game was against current division 1
champions Headington Amateurs which they won 1-0
thanks to a great finish from Joe Parker. In the
semi finals they were up against premier league
side and current cup holders Shrivenham but
won 2-0 with Joe Parker bagging both goals.
These 3 tough games has given everyone lots of
confidence the we can do well in our first
season in division 1 east.
